How to Calm a Busy Mind Without Fighting It

Three gentle ways to respond when thoughts are racing, including a simple EFT tapping exercise you can try.

When your mind is busy, trying to force it to become quiet can create another struggle. You are not only dealing with the thoughts; you are also judging yourself for having them.

A gentler aim is to help your nervous system feel a little safer while allowing thoughts to be present.

Name what is happening

Try saying, “My mind is very active right now.” This is different from “I cannot cope.” The first statement describes an experience; the second can make it feel permanent.

Orient to the room

Look around and quietly name five neutral things you can see. Notice the support of the chair or floor. This brings some attention out of the thought stream and into the present environment.

Try a short tapping round

Tap gently through the EFT points while using a phrase such as:

Even though my mind is doing a lot right now, I am open to giving myself one calmer moment.

You do not need to make the thoughts disappear. Notice whether the pressure around them reduces, even slightly.

Small reductions matter. A shift from eight out of ten to six out of ten may be enough to help you sleep, make a decision or respond more thoughtfully.
