Using EFT When Everything Feels Too Much
A step-by-step way to make emotional overwhelm more manageable without trying to solve everything at once.
Overwhelm often happens when many concerns become fused into one large feeling: work, relationships, health, unfinished tasks and fear about the future can all seem to arrive at once.
The first task is not to solve all of it. It is to make the experience small enough to approach safely.
Start with the body
Ask yourself where you notice the overwhelm physically. It may feel like pressure in the chest, tight shoulders, a heavy stomach or restless energy.
Give the sensation a number from zero to ten. This is not a test; it simply gives you a reference point.
Use simple words
As you tap, you might say:
- “This pressure in my chest.”
- “There is so much to hold.”
- “I do not have to solve every part right now.”
- “Perhaps I can give myself five per cent more space.”
After one or two rounds, pause and notice what has changed. The sensation may move, soften or reveal one specific concern that needs attention first.
When overwhelm is severe, persistent or connected with risk to your safety, seek appropriate professional or urgent support rather than relying on a self-help technique alone.
