Why Understanding Your Patterns Is Not Always Enough
Why insight can coexist with strong emotional reactions, and how body-based approaches may help bridge the gap.
You may understand exactly why you react in a certain way and still find yourself repeating the reaction. This can be frustrating, especially when you have spent a long time thinking, reading or talking about the pattern.
Insight is valuable, but an emotional response is not always maintained by conscious beliefs alone. It can also involve learned associations, bodily sensations and automatic protective responses.
The gap between knowing and feeling
You can know that a meeting is not dangerous while your body reacts with a racing heart. You can know that a past event is over while feeling tense when something reminds you of it.
This does not mean you are irrational or failing. It means different parts of your experience may need different kinds of support.
Working with the reaction that is here now
EFT invites you to notice the current response rather than argue with it. You might tap while acknowledging, “Part of me still expects this to go badly.”
The aim is not to impose positive thinking. It is to give the emotional response enough attention and safety that it may update naturally.
Understanding can provide the map. A gentle experiential practice may help your system take the journey.
